Lady Bucs Tip-off 2024 with Two Conference Games
ST THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands, January 4, 2024 – The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) women's basketball team begins 2024 with their first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) games this week as they host Fisk University and Oakwood University in back-to-back contests on January 4 and 6, respectively.
The Lady Buccaneers will take the court in search of their first GCAC win in this homestand as the team currently 0-2 in conference play.
The Buccaneers' first opponent, Fisk, comes into the matchup at 7-6 overall and 4-1 in GCAC play, and is currently tied for second place in the league.
Oakwood enters their matchup with the Lady Bucs at 3-9 and 1-3 and are currently on a three-game losing streak which the Lady Bucs will be looking to extend on their home floor.
Kashay Bass will lead the charge for the Lady Buccaneers as she ranks in the top 10 in four statistical categories in the GCAC. Bass is tied for conference lead in blocks, while ranking sixth in points per game (12.5 ppg), ninth in rebounds with seven per game and shooting 47% from the field which ranks ninth place in the conference.
Freshman guard Ashukamayah Phillips continues to prove herself as an asset for her team. Phillips is averaging 12.2 points per game and has scored in double digits in three of the teams' six games, including exploding for a career high 23-point performance earlier this season. Philips currently ranks eighth in the conference in points per game.
On Thursday, UVI's matchup with Fisk with will tip off at 6 p.m. AST, while Saturday's action against Oakwood will begin at 7 p.m. AST. Admission is free for both contests.
