UVI Men’s Basketball Takes Three-Game Road Trip to Alabama
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands, January 1, 2025 – The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) men's basketball team will compete in the second leg of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Crossover in Alabama from January 3-7. This unique "pod play" format will showcase all 13 HBCUAC teams competing in cross-divisional play at two sites: Birthright Alumni Hall on the Campus of Stillman College and Talladega College's Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
In the last outing, UVI (3-4, 2-2 HBCUAC) suffered a tough 74-72 loss on the final possession to Rust College on December 17. The Buccaneers are 2-2 over their last four games after splitting the Wilberforce Pod during the HBCUAC Crossover in Wilberforce Ohio.
UVI will be embarking on a challenging road trip, playing three games over the course of four days at two different locations. The first game will take place at Birthright Alumni Hall, followed by two games at the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
The Buccaneers will face off against the conference-leading Tigers of Stillman College (7-6, 5-1 HBCUAC) on January 3, on the Tigers' home court. The following day, UVI will travel to Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center at Talladega College to compete against the Oakwood Ambassadors (1-12, 0-6 HBCUAC) in a neutral site matchup. The road trip will conclude with a game against Talladega College (8-6, 2-4 HBCUAC) on January 6.
The key to the Buccaneers' success this season has been their elite defense. The team currently leads the NAIA in steals and opponents' turnovers per game. As they continue conference play, the Buccaneers will aim to combine their offensive output with their stifling defense to gain a competitive edge leading them to victory.
