Double-doubles by Kashay Bass and Keshara Romain, not enough in loss to Ozark Christian

ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, October 30, 2025 – The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Women's basketball team lost its Home Opener at the Elridge W. Blake Sports and Fitness Center on Thursday night to Ozark Christian College 58-50 despite double-doubles by senior forward Kashay Bass and Junior Forward Keshara Romain.

UVI (1-2) got off to a slow start in the first half as Ozark Christian jumped out ahead of the Lady Buccaneers early in the game. The Lady Buccaneers who struggled offensively in the first two periods, would find themselves behind on the scoreboard in the first quarter, 11-6, and trailed 29-19 by halftime.

A determined second-half effort saw UVI mount a comeback. The Lady Buccaneers opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a layup from Bass, which gave them a 30-29 lead shortly after the 7-minute mark, their first lead since early in the game. It was a flurry of blocks and steals on the defensive end of the floor that ignited the Lady Buccaneers' transition offense that turned into points. The two teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the period and end the 3rd quarter in a 38 all tie.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Buccaneers fought to remain competitive; however, the Ambassadors gradually extended their lead, ultimately securing a 58-50 victory.

Bass delivered a standout performance, contributing 15 points, 17 rebounds, five blocks, and two steals.

Romain achieved her second consecutive double-double, scoring 12 points and collecting 18 rebounds, which brings her season averages to 15 points and 13.3 rebounds. The St. Croix native also added three blocks and a steal to her impressive performance.

"This was a great learning Experience for us," said Head Coach Stephanie Cooper. "We were able to stick to our goals on defense, so I was extremely happy with that. The team we faced is a tough opponent and a championship program, and I'm proud of the way we were able to battle with them throughout the game. I think this is a healthy sign of what kind of roster was built in the offseason and truly shows the potential of this team."

The Lady Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, October 31, for their second game of the home stand against the VI Elite Women in the 2025 Homecoming game. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
